Butterflies

When we returned from Australia we ordered caterpillars.

We had fun for several weeks watching them grow and change.

This weekend we said goodbye to our Painted Lady butterflies and let them fly free. A very fun spring project if your kids are interested in bugs.

And a bonus - a piece of Alice art related to the butterfly theme. When she drew this picture, I said, "Alice, what do those different words next to the butterflies mean?"

Alice's answer, "There is the Dad butterfly, then the 1st Baby butterfly, then the Mother butterfly who is the real leader, then the 2nd baby butterfly, then the Old butterfly, then the Substitute Leader butterfly because the Mother butterfly is pregnant. And a caterpillar at the bottom." HUH? I am fascinated and amused with her 6 year old perception that, you know, the Mother is the real leader but needs a little break while she's pregnant....   Way to go, Mama Butterfly!
